The Belts
| Students at Paterson's Karate
Works show their progress by the colour of belt they wear.
Each colour belt is a step towards the goal of Black Belt.
These belts can be considered as progress checks to make
sure every member is on the right path to Black belt excellence. |
|
The progression towards Black Belt is as follows: White,
Yellow, Orange, Purple, Green, Blue, Brown, Red, Conditional
Black, Black.
The belt colours have not been randomly selected, each one
has meaning, some are symbolic: White-signifies innocence,
no previous martial arts knowledge. Yellow- signifies earth
from which a plant (students) sprouts and takes root for a
strong martial arts foundation. Green- means the plant's (students)
growth as skills are developed. Blue - is the sky or heavens
which the plant grows towards and becomes a towering tree
as training progresses. Red - this means danger, the student
must exercise control and it is a warning for opponents to
stay away. Black - is the opposite to white, it means Knowledge
and maturity in the martial arts.
The Stripes
Stripes show a students progress at each belt level.
The first stripe: means the students knows the basic for their
level.
The second stripe: means the student knows the form for their
level.
The third stripe: means the student knows all the requirement
for that belt level and is capable of passing the grading.
This stripe is usually given out 2-3 weeks before grading.
